Wan Chai (Part One: A Brief Overview of Part of the Inner City) (Liz)

After venturing (mentally, at least) to the New Territories, now it’s time to return to the Island and into the inner cities, since there are so many more pictures from there haha XD

In this series of posts I’m going to post on parts of Wan Chai. This one will give a brief overview of what I saw of the restaurants on a few streets as I walked along a(nother) footbridge 🙂 In the next post I will talk about my experience at a restaurant, and in the third I shall post about more street food! 😀

There seems to be quite a mixture of types of eateries in Wan Chai, but having narrowed down my focus on the more rustic kinds of food, below are photos of mainly old traditional siu mei shops, cha cha’an tengs, and so on:

A macro street view first:

We see that it’s an old district with both new and old buildings, but the restaurants seem to have a certain age, just judging by the state of the hanging signs:

A closer look: We see “Double Happiness Siu Mei Fast Food Shop” in front, “Lucky Star Siu Mei Kitchen” behind it, and at the further back, “Golden Pot Cha Cha’an Teng” (they are all my own translations of the Chinese names :P) ; on the opposite side there is “Al Dente”, an Italian restaurant. So even in such an old area, there are both local and international eateries 🙂

Another street:

There is a dumpling shop and “Hong Kong Cafe” as well…

Spotted: another branch of that sells chicken thighs as mentioned in one of my Tsuen Wan posts, haha… Didn’t expect it to be a chain store though lol

And here we have a branch of “Aberdeen Southern Noodles and Vermicelli”, which is even more widely seen than the chicken branch…

And below is a Western chain store, “Grove”, which sells mainly sandwiches and spaghetti:

And below is “3.6.9. Restaurant Shanghai Shop” (curious name), which has been around for quite a long time, and it seems popular with students as well 🙂 And another icon of local restaurants–plastic chairs–are there too 🙂

This is by no means an exhaustive representation of Wan Chai; after all only a very small has been covered, but hopefully this can serve to show partly how a part of inner cities’ food culture is like 🙂

Please stay tuned for the next post! 😀
